Studying abroad at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Taiwan through the ACUCA Student Mobility Scheme was a life-changing experience for me. As a student from Meiji Gakuin University in Japan, I had the opportunity to spend the fall semester of 2024 (September to January) immersing myself in a new culture, learning from a different academic environment, and making meaningful connections. The International Office at my home university introduced me to this program, and I am grateful for the support they provided throughout the process.\

During my time at Wenzao Ursuline, I enrolled in various courses that expanded my knowledge beyond my major. I took subjects such as Chinese for exchange students, Economics and Industries in Southeast Asia, Cross-Cultural Communication, Manga for Japanese Pop Culture, the Study of Japanese Modern History, and Journalistic English. These courses not only improved my language skills but also deepened my understanding of cultural exchange, history, and media studies. Additionally, I continued studying Japanese to maintain my native language proficiency while learning in an international setting.

Adjusting to life in Taiwan was easier than I expected, thanks to the kindness of the local people. Taiwanese students and residents were always willing to help and made me feel welcome. However, understanding the traditions and rules of a new country still posed some challenges. Even though I had read about Taiwan’s customs online before arriving, experiencing them firsthand was different. Whenever I encountered difficulties, I asked friends for guidance and compared cultural differences with those in Japan. These experiences helped me adapt and appreciate Taiwan’s unique way of life.

One of the most memorable moments during my exchange program was celebrating Christmas on campus. The university hosted an Advent Lights Ceremony, where we lit candles, decorated a Christmas tree, and enjoyed stage performances. Seeing the campus illuminated with lights was truly magical. It was also a great chance to learn how people in other countries celebrate Christmas. Additionally, I participated in cultural activities such as making traditional radish cake in Meinong, which introduced me to Taiwan’s regional food traditions. These experiences enriched my understanding of the country’s diverse cultural heritage.

Living in a dormitory with students from different backgrounds also allowed me to build strong friendships with both Taiwanese and international students. We shared many moments, such as celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival by making mooncakes together with my Vietnamese roommates and participating in winter solstice events. These interactions broadened my perspective and taught me to appreciate the beauty of cultural diversity.

This exchange program taught me valuable lessons beyond academics. I learned the importance of viewing things from different perspectives and embracing new ways of thinking. My time in Taiwan helped me grow as a person, making me more open-minded and adaptable. I sincerely thank the International Offices of both my home and host universities for their guidance and support. For students considering the ACUCA Student Mobility Scheme, I strongly encourage them to leap—not only to improve language skills but also to develop a spirit of curiosity and adventure. Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity to explore the world, meet new people, and create unforgettable memories.
