2024 Fall Semester
Embarking on a semester-long exchange program in Taiwan was one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic and personal life. My journey began on September 6, 2024, when I departed from India, arriving in Taiwan the following day. Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU), my host university, had arranged a buddy to assist me, making my transition much smoother. She guided me through course selection, helped me settle into my new environment, and supported me as I adapted to life in Taiwan.
Academically, the experience was enriching, offering a flexible course selection that allowed me to explore diverse subjects. I enrolled in four courses totaling ten credits: Computational Thinking and Programming introduced problem-solving strategies using Python, with a focus on algorithms and data structures. Chinese Conversation (Beginner) improved my Mandarin speaking and listening skills, helping me communicate with locals. Industrial Internet of Things explored IoT applications in industries, culminating in a project where we developed a mixed reality environment to operate a robotic arm. Lastly, Business Applications in Python focused on using Python for business problem-solving, with a final project analyzing and visualizing Taiwan’s film market. The teaching approach at CYCU was highly interactive, emphasizing practical learning, teamwork, and real-world applications. Initially, language barriers posed a challenge, but I gradually adapted to the study culture. The university’s well-equipped labs and excellent infrastructure enhanced my learning experience, and the professors were always kind, approachable, and supportive, making academics even more enjoyable.
Beyond academics, my time in Taiwan was filled with cultural immersion. I celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival, sharing aspects of Indian culture with local students while enjoying mooncakes. The university’s International Office organized numerous events, including a barbecue party, a Halloween trip to Leofoo Village, and a two-day excursion to Hualien and Taitung. These trips allowed me to explore Taiwan’s breathtaking landscapes and interact with indigenous tribes, gaining insight into their traditions and way of life. One of the most memorable aspects of my exchange was the warmth and hospitality of the Taiwanese people. From professors and classmates to strangers in the city, everyone was welcoming, making Taiwan feel like a second home.

CYCU had a vibrant international student community, providing opportunities to interact with peers from Japan, Indonesia, and other countries. Through shared experiences and cultural exchanges, I built strong friendships and gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures. This exchange program was a journey of personal growth, pushing me beyond my comfort zone as I navigated life independently in a foreign country. Overcoming language barriers, adapting to a new culture, and embracing challenges made me more confident and self-reliant. Taiwan’s friendly people, bustling night markets, and scenic landscapes made my experience truly unforgettable. The friendships I formed and the cultural exchanges I experienced enriched my journey, leaving me with cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
