2024 Fall Semester
I am a second-year Fine Arts student at Silliman University. In the fall of 2024, I studied at Keimyung University as an exchange student through the ACUCA Student Mobility Scheme. I first learned about the program from my close friend, Cahrel Dorothy Rojo, who shared a post from Silliman University’s official Facebook page. Despite facing a few challenges and moments of doubt, I took a leap of faith and submitted my application, telling myself it was worth a shot—no matter where it might lead. That decision marked the beginning of an incredible journey.
During my time at Keimyung University, I took Korean Language Practice (1), Print Advertising, and Social Media Content Production. These courses allowed me to enhance my language skills, explore advertising techniques, and understand social media content strategies. While studying in a foreign country came with challenges, such as adapting to cultural norms and overcoming the language barrier, I gradually learned to navigate my new environment. I balanced my time wisely, utilized student discounts, and practiced Korean to communicate better. The support from my professors and their willingness to provide guidance made my academic experience even more insightful.
Beyond academics, my exchange experience taught me invaluable life lessons. I developed adaptability in unfamiliar situations, learned to be kinder to myself, and gained confidence in my ability to overcome challenges. More importantly, I realized the significance of building connections with people from different backgrounds. The friendships I formed made my experience unforgettable and contributed to my personal growth. I am grateful to Silliman University’s Scholarship and Aid Division, the United Board Records Office, and the Fine Arts Department for their unwavering support throughout my application process. Additionally, Keimyung University’s International Office ensured that exchange students felt welcomed and engaged through various activities, such as field trips around Daegu. I had the chance to explore Korean culture and heritage firsthand. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share my own culture by teaching Korean middle school students about the Philippines. These experiences deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange and strengthened my sense of belonging in an international setting.
For future students considering the ACUCA SMS program, I highly encourage approaching the experience with an open mind and a positive attitude. Studying abroad alone may seem daunting, but it is a transformative journey that shapes you in ways you never expected. Researching universities that align with your academic goals and embracing cultural immersion is key to making the most of the opportunity. Above all, cherish every moment, build meaningful connections, and trust yourself. You will emerge from the experience with memories and lessons that will last a lifetime.
