Academic and Cultural Enrichment in
Taiwan

During my FMS visit to Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan, I participated in various sessions and visits that were categorized into academic pursuits, exciting collaboration opportunities, and experiences beyond professional growth. Academically, I explored Metaverse applications, visited the Office of Technology, the Physics Department, and engaged with the departments of IoT-Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, as well as online education and media. For collaboration opportunities, I delved into areas like AI and ERP systems, Metaverse and Augmented Reality, online courses, and Information Technology. Beyond professional growth, I immersed myself in cultural experiences, including exploring Taipei and its cultural offerings.

I presented on our institution’s AI-enabled systems and in-house developed ERP, which was well-received. Potential collaboration opportunities in areas like AI, Metaverse and Augmented Reality, and Online Courses were identified and will be pursued further.

The study program provided fresh insights and learnings. Academically, I gained valuable knowledge in Metaverse applications, online education, and various technological departments. These insights will be incredibly valuable for my future academic pursuits. Collaboration opportunities opened doors to exciting potential partnerships, and my presentation on AI-enabled systems and ERP was appreciated, with a professor expressing interest in an India-Taiwan project.

Culturally, I was impressed by the warmth and hospitality of my Taiwanese friends and colleagues. Initially, I had safety concerns as a woman traveling abroad, but I was made to feel completely at ease and pampered. This encouraged me to explore Taiwan’s rich cultural experiences, including visiting Taipei 101 and participating in student concerts and SDG competitions.

From this study abroad experience, I learned several key values. Openness to new knowledge was reinforced through my exploration of new subjects and departments. The importance of collaboration was highlighted by the potential partnerships in AI and other technological areas. Cultural appreciation grew through the kindness and hospitality I experienced, and my resilience and adaptability were strengthened as I overcame initial anxieties and fully immersed myself in the program.

Several offices contributed to the success of my faculty exchange program abroad, including the Office of Technology, Metaverse, Mechanical Engineering, and Media. My experience in Taiwan gave me a deeper appreciation for other Asian cultures. Taiwanese culture is rich and complex, with a strong emphasis on hospitality, interpersonal relationships, ethics, education, and family. Stability within the household, respect for elders, and loyalty to the family are vital aspects of Taiwanese culture.

For fellow faculty considering the ACUCA’s Faculty Exchange Program, I recommend focusing on both academic and professional growth and personal and cultural enrichment. Academically, broaden your knowledge by exploring new areas of study, seek collaboration opportunities, and develop new teaching methods. Personally, immerse yourself in the local culture, step outside your comfort zone, and build lasting relationships with local colleagues. Logistically, research the program and host institution, plan your stay carefully, and prepare for cultural differences. A Faculty Exchange Program is a transformative experience that benefits both professionally and personally.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the ACUCA Secretariat for providing me this rare and wonderful opportunity to visit Chung Yuan Christian University, Taiwan, under the FMS scheme. I also thank God Almighty for considering me worthy and giving me this honor. I would also like to express my deepest appreciation to the management team, the Principal, Bursar, ISC Director, and Head of the Department of Physics at Lady Doak College for giving me this opportunity and encouraging me to apply for the FMS program. My heartfelt thanks go to each faculty member, director, and the management team from Chung Yuan University, Taiwan, for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel at home during my stay.

During my academic visit, I explored Metaverse applications, the Office of Technology, the Physics Department, online education, media, and the departments of IoT-Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The knowledge and insights gained from these areas will be invaluable in my future academic endeavors.
My presentation on our AI-enabled systems and in-house developed ERP was well-received, with a professor expressing interest in collaborating on an India-Taiwan project under the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Potential collaboration also emerged with the Metaverse department on Augmented Reality projects, and Chung Yuan University explored the possibility of collaborating with us on online courses. Additionally, meeting the Information Technology department at Tunghai University opened doors for potential future collaborations.

Beyond professional growth, I was particularly impressed by the warmth, hospitality, humility, love, and concern displayed by my Taiwanese friends. Being a woman, I initially worried about safety and security, but my friends in Taiwan made me enjoy each moment, feel safe, and pampered me with their care. This encouraged and motivated me to indulge in and explore the diverse cultural experiences. I had the chance to visit the iconic Taipei 101 observatory and the beach, soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Participating in the student concert and the SDG competitions were fantastic ways to immerse myself in Taiwanese culture.

Thank you once again for this incredible opportunity. I look forward to exploring the potential collaborations discussed and sharing the knowledge gained with my colleagues. I assure you that I will transmit the knowledge gained, the experiences enjoyed, the collaborations created, and the memories cherished with my home institution, as these have created a significant impact on my life and have carved a special place in my heart.
