2009 Typhoon Morakot Update

The following is a letter sent to the ACUCA Secretariat this month from St. John’s University in Taiwan.

Dear friends,

On behalf of St. John’s University, Taipei, may I express to you my sincere thanks and gratitude for your concern and prayers for the tragic situation in southern Taiwan as a result of Typhoon Morakot last week.

As the disaster unfolds, it is clear that many lives have been lost, homes and buildings buried, crops and livelihoods destroyed. Unfortunately one of our students lost his life when his car was swept away from a broken bridge into the flooded torrents of the river. We have more than 70 students from the affected areas, including around 10 students whose homes have been damaged and whose families need help.

This past weekend, a group of students from the university student Christian group have gone with the chaplaincy assistants and counselors to Chia-Yi County Government to assist the Red Cross with the relief work. Much of this work involves unpacking boxes of donated items, sorting them into clothes, food, water, medicines etc, arranging the storage; followed by packing up the trucks ready for dispatch to the mountain areas. Our students went together with a group from the local Episcopal churches, and yesterday afternoon they were personally visited by the Bishop of Taiwan, the Rt. Rev. David J. H .Lai, who encouraged and prayed for them.

This coming week we are sending a group of about 20 students to Taitung on the east coast to help clean an elementary school ready for the start of the new academic year on September 1. Many schools, as well as homes, have been inundated with mud, and need to be cleared. We hope that much of the relief work can be accomplished very quickly as this is the typhoon season, and more typhoons are expected.

In the USA, ‘Episcopal Relief and Development’ has set up a Disaster Response Fund to provide help. Here in Taiwan we are doing our own fund-raising to help our students who have been affected. If you would like to contribute, then all donations will be most welcome.

Thank you again for your continued concern and support at this time.

Yours sincerely,

Jean-lien Chen

President, St. John’s University

Next Round of the Student Mobility Scheme

The ACUCA secretariat is currently accepting applications for the next round of the   Student Mobility Scheme (SMS). For those who are unaware of the program, it was set up to foster understanding between students at ACUCA institutions, while at the same time  making use of the diverse ACUCA network.

The SMS provides for a one semester, tuition free stay at a participation institution. Students are given administrative, as well as financial support with their exchange. The secretariat acts as a conduit between the applicant and their chosen institutions. Students are usually placed in either their fist or second, out of an initial choice of three universities. A travel grant is also given to a maximum of $750.

We urge the international offices at each of the 31 member institutions to promote this worthwhile program to their student body. We also welcome applications to join the SMS from any ACUCA institution.

SMS Application Deadline

Changes to the Student Mobility Scheme

With the increase in ACUCA Student Mobility Scheme (SMS) participating members, we have found it necessary to make the SMS procedure simple and convenient to enable promotion of the program. The Secretariat will no longer coordinate the collection of applications and assign the students to the various hosting institutions. From January 2010, the Secretariat’s primary function will be to act as a regulator and distributor of the travel subsidy. The role of Secretariat for the SMS will now be:

Ÿ Promoting the SMS

Ÿ Helping new member institutions to join

Ÿ Maintaining a record of all applications

Ÿ Updating the semester deadlines and requirements on behalf of each  participating institution on the ACUCA website

Ÿ Arranging travel subsidies

SMS Application Procedure

  1. Each participating institution must provide the necessary information for the student mobility program (deadlines and requirements) to the ACUCA Secretariat. The Secretariat will collect and distribute the information through this website.
  2. Each institution should themselves apply directly to ACUCA SMS participating institutions and maintain communication with them to enable successful assignment of applying students between the respective exchanging institutions.
  3. There are TWO parts to the application:

Ÿ For admission, the application materials required by the host institution should be sent directly to the institution in advance of the deadline.

Ÿ For the ACUCA travel subsidy, an ACUCA nomination form (downloadable from this website) should be sent to the ACUCA Secretariat when the institutional application form is submitted. Upon acceptance, the applying institution should send the ACUCA travel subsidy form (downloadable from this website), a copy of the acceptance letter, and a copy of the flight tickets to the Secretariat by the following dates:

 SemesterTravel subsidy deadline
1st halfSeptember 30 (previous year as the planned time of study)
2nd halfFebruary 28 (the same year as the planned time of study)

ACUCA Biennial Conference & 18th General Assembly (November 1-3, 2010)

The ACUCA Biennial Conference and 18th General Assembly took place at Keimyung University, Daegu, Korea, from November 1-3, 2010. The theme for this year’s conference was “Sustainable Development and Christian Initiative.” With this Conference we would like to have taken the opportunity to address some of the critical environmental issues, which our region is facing. We were mindful of the need to strike a balance between a theological and scientific focus. It was our wish to explore the various ways in which we can utilize our ACUCA institutions’ core Christian principles, as well as our extensive and growing ACUCA network. The Conference was an opportunity to share best practices on environmentally-friendly campus development, to initiate international and inter-institutional cooperation, and to re-affirm our commitment to the service of the Christian message in Asia.

We had identified the following as our Conference objectives:

. To identify the connections between the Christian ethic and environmental action, in the light of the dangers and risks faced by the environment in Asia.

· To raise awareness of the environmental dangers that unfettered development poses to Asia, and to identify the role that Christian institutions of higher education can play in developing a sustainable society.

· To share ideas on the successful implementation of policies and curriculum to educate students and to develop an environmentally-friendly campus.

· To explore the possibility of developing a framework for collaborative environmental programs, utilizing ACUCA’s potential for student and faculty exchange.

East Japan Earthquake

To ACUCA Members
Re: East Japan Earthquake

The March 11, 2011 East Japan Earthquake devastated East Japan, especially the Tohoku region. ACUCA member Tohoku Gakuin University, which is located near the epicenter in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, incurred substantial damage. Despite immense difficulties, faculty, staff and students of the university are now engaging in an all-out restoration effort.
On behalf of the ACUCA members in Japan, I would like to express my deepest appreciation for your warm messages of sympathy after the earthquake. In response to a call for donations, five Japanese ACUCA member universities including ICU (International Christian University) have agreed to make contributions to support Tohoku Gakuin University. In the event that we ask for donations from the international community, we would be most grateful for your support.
My prayers and thoughts are with all who perished in this disaster and their families. May God bless all those suffering from this calamity.

Support to Thai Member Institutions

ACUCA Executive Committee members have decided to make a donation to each of ACUCA’s Thai member institutions in order to provide support in the face of the flooding the region is currently experiencing. The donations are in the amount of US$5,000 to each of the four Thai member institutions (Payap University, Assumption University, Christian University of Thailand and Asia-Pacific International University)(US$20,000 total).

The member institutions in Thailand contacted us to let us know how they are faring with regard to the flooding in the region. Although they have not directly experienced damage from this disaster, an end to the flooding is not yet in sight and the Executive Committee decided to make the donation in light of the relief activities each school is starting at this time.

We believe there are many ACUCA colleges and universities already providing relief in various forms to Thailand but we hope all ACUCA member institutions will continue to offer their support to the Thai people and ACUCA’s member institutions in Thailand.

2014 ACUCA Student Camp

The 2013 ACUCA Management Conference held at Fu Jen Catholic University from November 1-3, 2013 has been successfully held.

“Values Education: Re-discovering our Values to build a better You and build a better World.” (11-15 August 2014, Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan)

ACUCA successfully completed its Student Camp held at Fu Jen Catholic University from 11-15 of August 2014.

Participants comprised of 101 students from 8 countries (Japan, Korea, Hongkong, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and India). 71 came from different universities. 30 student volunteers from the host university were at the same time participants. The largest delegation were from Japan (18 students), Taiwan (17) and Indonesia (16).

The theme for this year’s camp was “Values Education: Re-discovering our Values to build a better you and build a better World.” The students came together to review their own personal values, the values of their culture and the values of their faith; reflect on the how they live their values as students in a rapid changing world and to rediscover that living out the good values in one’s life will contribute to build a better world.

A special feature of the camp was the invitation for participants to write an article about the theme. On the third day, during a workshop on re-examining values in fast changing society, a dynamic approach was used by the student volunteers to enable the participants to have a voice and make a choice. Based on the feedback and reflection of the delegates, they found the activity thought provoking and challenging. They also remembered the impact of the sharing circle on the second day when they were asked to “empty themselves” of their cellphones, which they value most.

2018 International Conference on Mission Studies – CALL FOR PAPERS

“Answering The Call: Mission In Time Of Terror” (May 30-June 1, 2018)

In recent years, missionaries, faith-based development workers, and Churches around the world are experiencing an escalating threat of violence from various terrorist groups. Some are targeted, not for their faith but because they are easy targets. Religious extremism (e.g. ISIL, Abu-sayyaf, Christian militias, etc.) that emerged in the 21st century has challenged Churches, theologians and missiologists to revisit Christian’s understanding of mission.

Through keynote presentations and group discussion after each speaker, this conference will provide opportunities to deepen our understanding of Christian mission, inter-religious relations, the patterns of religious extremism and the nature and scope of our moral responses to them.

Submission Details: December 15, 2017.

For complete details see this accompanying document.

Hannam University News

Hannam Ranks Fourth in Nationwide University Entrepreneurship Index

Hannam University was once against confirmed as a bona fide gateway to entrepreneurship with a fourth-place ranking on a nationwide university entrepreneurship index. Hannam placed fourth in a June 14 assessment of 247 four-year and 170 two-year higher education institutions in South Korea by Maeil Business News. Its strong performance in the area of entrepreneurship included a first-place ranking for sales by faculty start-ups, a sixth-place ranking for student entrepreneurship support funding, and a tenth-place ranking for number of student entrepreneurs and student start-ups. “Our first-place ranking nationwide on the university entrepreneurship index is the result of hard work by all of our university’s members, who strove to make our university the top force in entrepreneurship,” said Hannam University President Lee Duk-hoon. Lee also said the university would “continue to work nonstop until we are the country’s top-ranked university for entrepreneurship, including areas such as angel clubs and technology transfers.” Hannam University doubled its number of entrepreneurship classes from 74 to 143 between 2017 and 2018, while the number of start-up clubs rose from 75 all the way to 115. Since the 2018 academic year, it has instituted “Understanding Entrepreneurship” as a general education requirement.

31st in University Brand Assessment

Hannam University ranked 31st nationwide and first among private universities in the Daejeon/Chungcheong region in a survey of university brand reputation. The result was based on a Korea Corporate Reputation Institute analysis of 84,536,158 items of brand-related big data for 100 major four-year universities in South Korea over a one-month period from March 27 to April 28. For the brand reputation assessment, big data on brand-related consumer activities were sorted into participation value, communication value, social value, market value, and financial value categories.

New Daniel Scholarships Established

The introduction of Hannam University “Daniel Scholarships” as a financial aid program for undergraduates is drawing major attention. In addition to covering tuition in full from entrance to graduation, the scholarships also offer benefits including 4 million won per year for books, free dormitory use, and full financial aid upon general graduate school admission. Over 450 million won in benefits have been paid to date. The scholarships were funded when the full amount saved by discontinuing the official presidential vehicle system was invested in financial aid. With President Lee Duk-hoon now traveling to work on foot, the creation of the Daniel Scholarships means that the yearly costs of 150 million won spent covering rental fees, gas, and other charges for his exclusive vehicle service are now being returned to the students.

AU provides mental and spiritual counseling to students

Having been alerted to the threat of the coronavirus since early February of 2020, the Assumption University (AU) of Thailand took immediate steps to mitigate the spread of the virus on its campus by activating to a fuller extent its Online Learning Management System. The system allows video conferencing of faculty members with their respective students on specified time and ensuring that the activity of teaching and learning goes on uninterrupted on an ad-hoc basis. “The full-online learning mode for its degree programs took effect on March 16, 2020 following the recommendation of the Thai Council of University Presidents and such is expected to continue to be implemented during the first semester, June – October 2020, Dir. Chatelier said. Its students from China and other parts of the world were advised to remain in their home countries and requested to participate in the virtual classes instead.

Sensitive of the difficulties that the students may be experiencing, the university administration extends various forms of assistance. Specifically, to monitor the well- being of its students, the university provides mental and spiritual counseling services to those who need them. Within Academic Units, the Coordinators for Student Services activated online systems of Counseling particularly for two types of students, the international students who were stuck overseas, unable to report back to the University, and for those international students who were in Bangkok, unable to go home. In both cases the strategies carried out were to feed information on updates via the University website, the faculty website, and through the website of the office of International Affairs( www.oia.au.edu ). The University’s Department of Student Affairs through its seasoned counselors provided immediate counseling to students via Zoom platforms and through teleconferences. The students, Thai and non-Thai were also offered counseling options through the neighboring Buddhist temples, Christian Churches while the two Chapels on either of the campuses were open all through the day for those who needed to seek silent prayer and spiritual recourse. Characteristic issues which arose among students were fear of isolation during the lockdowns, inertia issues due to lack of exercise, separation from loved ones, and sometimes dietary stress. The University’s Campus Ministers and the Chaplain were ready at all times to react to student calls for either counselling, or advice on faith issues and personal matters. At the level of the Graduate Schools, the program in Counselling Psychology set up hotlines, and immediate Zoom access for the Graduate students who needed attention. The dialogic value of the interactions between student stress reach-outs and the capacities of the staff and faculty to relate to them during the COVID 19, underscored one of the values

of the Catholic identity of Assumption University. The university is indeed “alma mater” particularly when its students are in need or distressed. “We cannot fulfil entirely the students needs but we are there to listen, to cheer up, to empathize, to offer suggestions and possible solutions,” Director Chatelier shared. The University emerges as neighbour, not mere structure, as comfort provider, not, merely knowledge facilitator. The University is coach, mentor and fellow traveller in the pathways, unseemingly, as they are, in the COVID 19 crisis. University President Rev. Brother Bancha Saenghiran, in the best stroke of the Good Samaritan extended to all Undergraduate enrolees a 25% Scholarship till October 2020, while assuring all Faculty and Staff of equitable emoluments, with no deductions whatsoever. “Let it not be left unsaid that we prevail in our faith in God our Father, and in Jesus our Lord and Savior to stand with us in these times, and to help us extend our hands of assistance to those who need it in our community and elsewhere,” Director Chatelier said.

ACUCA welcomes 5 new member institutions

During the June 2020 ACUCA Executive Committee meeting, the officers and the members of the executive board warmly welcome five new Christian academic institutions into the fold. Hokusei Gakuen University, Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, Widya Mandira Catholic University, and Universitas Kristen Indonesia have been accepted since June 22 into the now 69-member association. The fifth Christian institution is the Wesleyan University-Philippines which was formally accepted during the 24th ACUCA General Assembly last November 7, 2019.

Hokusei Gakuen University is a private university located in Sapporo, Japan. It traces its roots to 1887 when a missionary of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, Sarah C.
